Abstract
Data is the most fundamental aspect of any research conducted and is the difference between screwing around, and science; yet data alone does not yield any answers to the questions sought within research laboratories. The key to creating accurate and predictive models of the universe relies on the rigorous analysis of collected data. Thankfully as technology grows, our lives are made easier in the collection and the analysis of vast quantities of data with the support of data visualization tools. But the ability to analyze said data is limited by the capabilities of the data visualization tools used in labs; even the most cutting-edge, accurate recording instruments are rendered useless unless the versatility of data visualization tools is improved. Here at Allegheny, I created a graphics user interface focused data visualization tool, Hypermongo, as a supplement to the 1987 interactive plotting software, Supermongo. These tools are used for analyzing smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to study stellar dynamics in astrophysics. I present Hypermongo’s several advantages and helpful design features to study the Starsmasher simulation of a tidal disruption encounter between a 1 M☉, 1 R☉ main sequence star and a 10 M☉ black hole.
