Abstract
Biofouling, or the accumulation of microbes adhered to a surface, has brought economic inefficiency in the maritime, and aquaculture fields while presenting health risks in medical fields. The first developed antifouling products, such as organotin compounds, were developed in ac polyacrylate-based paints and were shown to have several ecological and environmental issues, thus displaying the need for an environmentally friendly antifoulant. 2,5-diketopiperazines, molecules that naturally occur in secretions of marine fungi and bacteria, have been shown to exhibit antifouling activities. A retrosynthetic framework for a proposed route of synthesis to a 2,5-diketopiperazine derivative polymer is shown in Scheme 1. Recent progress of
the synthesis is discussed.
