Abstract
With the ultimate goal of determining whether a stereoselective Mannich reaction is suitable for an undergraduate laboratory module, the proline-catalyzed Mannich reaction was adapted to microwave conditions in order to efficiently synthesize N-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4-oxonorvaline ethyl ester. Synthesis of the intermediate imine (Methyl 2-[(4-methoxyphenyl)imino]acetate) was achieved in high yield (95%+) and can be used without purification, however the Mannich reaction itself resulted in variable yields, low purity, and poor reproducibility.
