Abstract

The Mayan Movement originally formed as a response to the violence in the 1970s and 1980s to ensure that the Maya culture did not disappear. It is the unification of various civil society organizations to fight for indigenous rights and create conditions so they can be proud of their Mayan identities. I examine six children’s literature publications, written by Guatemalan authors who identify as Maya, to see how the stories promote the values of the Mayan Movement. The books were published between 1995 and 2006. Each is in Spanish, except for one in both Spanish and the Mayan language Kaqchikel. The intended audience for most of the books is Mayan children between the ages of five and twelve. Without the inclusion of youth in the movement, it will likely fizzle, and the children who can read these books have the greatest opportunities to become leaders. I found that the chronology of these publications reflects the major goals of the movement at the time. All the stories work to educate Mayan children in a positive way about their culture and as well as strengthen their Mayan identity. Additionally, they teach values and give suggestions which empower readers to be successful in the future.
