Abstract
This research paper analyzes the characteristics that affect the sale of hot dogs at Major League Baseball (MLB) stadiums. The main research question specifically asks what economic and team characteristics affect the sales of hot dogs in the Albin the research, it is explained that there is minimal research done on the specific topic of hot dogs. This meant that for the research, factors that have a close relation to the sales of hot dogs were examined. The research looked at was focused mainly on concession and pricing, as those are factors that relate to hot dog sales. A method of regressions was conducted to answer the main question in this research. While multiple characteristics can affect sales, this research investigates four variables that are the most important in the impact of sales. The variables tested were attendance, measured by the annual season attendance at each stadium; a city’s average income; the number of wins a team has in a given season; and region (Midwest, South, East, and West). The data used for this research was provided by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council from 2012 to 2019. To run the regression, 29 teams of the MLB were used and divided by region. The determination of the variables leads to attendance and wins being highly important as they increase the sales of hot dogs. On the other hand, city income had no impact on how many hot dogs were sold depending on the stadium’s location. Lastly, teams in the East sell the most hot dogs if the LA Dodgers are omitted from the MLB team list.
