Abstract
Food is an integral aspect of Jewish practice, both in terms of Judaism as a religion and in Jewishness as a broader, often primarily cultural, identity. The Jewish dietary laws, known as kashrut, were initially laid out in the Hebrew Bible and they have been a topic of discussion, interpretation, and debate since then. These laws detail what animals can and cannot be eaten, how they should be killed and prepared, and prohibit eating the resulting meat with dairy products. As many of the sources in this bibliography demonstrate, Jews have a long history of adapting kashrut as they moved throughout the world over time. This movement of Jews, in some cases by choice and in others by force, is referred to as “the Diaspora” and it resulted in a diverse array of Jewish foodways, which includes the production, preparation, consumption, and rituals related to food. In recent centuries, even as many Jews have moved away from observing kashrut, they are often still consuming Jewish foods and in some cases, their consumption of taboo foods or their vegetarianism are also tied to their Jewish identities. Because food is so central to Judaism and Jewish identities, there is a wealth of scholarship in the growing field of Jewish food studies. This bibliography focuses on English-language sources, but still offers a holistic, if not exhaustive, survey of Jewish foodways in a wide range of places and time periods. A variety of sources are represented here including academic books, anthologies, and articles as well as books intended for a wider audience and cookbooks.
