Abstract
My project explores the genre of AI image creation with a revised theory of aesthetics. I argue that AI images and works to come in the future do not fit into the mold of aesthetics and an adjustment of how to speak about them needs to be made with regards to a toolkit of terms and the theory of Benedetto Croce. The important terms that are identified are creation separate from production, intention, and reception along with explaining the importance of Croce’s use of intuition with art, imitation, and his view of reception. These terms and Crocean concepts are then applied to boundary-pushing art throughout the years, selecting Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, and the photorealist movement as the subjects for discussion before applying the core terms and concepts to the case of AI. I propose three main concerns to act as driving forces in the discussion of AI images and future works being emphasizing creativity, reevaluating the role of the artist, and having the spectator be concerned with their experience with a work/image and not about trying to label it as art or not. My argument presents a way to engage in aesthetic discussion of AI images and future means of creation in a way which doesn’t restrict/diminish what is being created in this modern age.
