Abstract
The United States is known for its diverse population, and multicultural individuals make up a significant portion of this diversity. The experiences of multicultural individuals in the United States can be complex and varied. While many embrace and celebrate their multiple cultural identities, others may struggle to find a sense of belonging or may face discrimination and prejudice based on their backgrounds. This study investigated the relationship between multicultural individuals' identity, cultural conflict, sense of belonging, and self-esteem, as well as potential gender differences that occurred. In the current study, multicultural identified participants (n=23) were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) to complete surveys with self-report measures of identity, self-esteem, sense of belonging, and cultural conflict. Regression analyses showed that cultural conflict consistently predicted lower levels of self-esteem and sense of belonging, supporting the study's hypotheses. No significant gender differences were found with the exception of women showing higher collective identity than men. Limitations, implications, and future directions are discussed.
