One score and five years ago, that president decided to set out on a new quest. At that tim e a regal council was convened by the court of Allegheny to appoint a new leader. The highest tribunal in the land ordained Lawrence Lee Pelletier as the sixteenth leader of the Kingdom upon the Hilltop. Since that tim e when all the people atop the M ount of Meadville heralded the corination of Dr. Pelletier, there have been more new structures built, more scutage raised, and more new citizens in the Land of Allegheny than ever before. But perhaps more im portantly, Dr. Pelletier has touched the lives of many people. He has, for example, gone to hospitals to give the coveted Sheepskins to the infirm ed and ailing. It is because of these acts of unselfish devotion to his kingdom , that we, the Editors and Staff of the K aldron 1980 dedicate this m anuscript to Dr. Lawrence Lee Pelletier, President of Allegheny College, 1956-1980. .c 4 o- % i T> nee upon a term, fair meds and other sundry other gentle folk bid fare to books, their toil, their care, and sally forth to various and sundry special events. For a watch, a night span or long as a fortnight the quest is not fo r booklore; the quest is for joy, fo r cup-mates; deepening of the soul and peace in the heart. As the planting seasons passed, and the seasons of snow came and went, these hardy folks began calling themselves “ clu b s” and “ organizations.” These actors and actresses w ould often perform for, and enrich, the masses. They w ould act, sing, dance, display their crafts, and educate the fo lk in the tow n of Allegheny and the region known as M eadville. These clubs and organizations brought joy into the lives of young and old, and com m oner alike. W ithout these players, life in Allegheny w ould be dull indeed. Sadly, the citizens of this land had no means through which to join together into one. That is, until one day, Fratos, the Bearer of Brotherhood, appeared to these townspeople. He showed them the way to join together and rule themselves. The results of the labours of Fratos, still visible today, soon came to be known as Sororities and Fraternities. And it came to pass that these folks, although from many parts of the land, came to be known as the Greeks in the Kingdom. The King has a large and diverse court known as the Wizards of Academia. Were it not for these mystical men and women, the fair citizens up on the hilltop would sally forth into the Land of Reality ill-prepared to joust with the dragon and the cyclops. The seers mystically transform the peons into great thinkers. The leaders of the Kingdom are those people who have had the spells of the Wizards cast upon them for sixteen seasons. The people, who have endured the hurt, as well as the joys, put upon them by the Sorcerers, lead the citizens of Allegheny to greater levels of confidence. This makes the pains less painful, the joys more rewarding, and for this, the people throughout the land are very grateful. This year is no different. With each year, however, something new is tried. This year is. of course, no different. Karen was always the mainstaff of the book. She kept us going as times got tough, and tried to stay sane at dead line time. Dan was hilarious and made us laugh when we were ready to cry. Our thoughts are free and easy flowing with the morning winds roaming in and out to yesterday and tomorrow. There are memories contained within that tree and hopes are bound up in that cloud and today is here before us in the faces that we see. Tears fall on meditations of pleasant memories and eyes glisten at the thoughts of life tomorrow But our thoughts of the present are quiet and pushed into the recesses of our minds. The person beside you says hello and brings you back to reality of afternoon. Our nostalgia and our dreams have not been wiped clean away, but taken from the trees and clouds and then placed securely back into our heads. We now live for this instant in looking towards the heavens and to the grassy slopes around and being here with friends to share those memories and hopes and most of all; to make new dreams together.
