Abstract
Many people engage in veganism as a spiritual practice. This chapter will focus primarily on people who engage in veganism as a spiritual practice in the contemporary U.S. For some, veganism may be part of how they express their religious identity, and for others, veganism may function as a religious identity unto itself. As a spiritual practice, veganism is often brought about by a conversion, after which it informs decision-making as vegans choose what to eat, what to wear, and how to spend their time. And as people settle into practicing veganism, it often shapes or reshapes their relationships with other humans, animals, and the divine, and is, in turn, shaped by their religious background and social context.
