Abstract
In this project, I look at how the French republican model still holds true in the twenty-first century as demonstrated in the policy and discourse of French political systems. I argue that throughout the twenty-first century that French politicians have implemented a more traditional form of republicanism with a major emphasis being on integration, focusing on how immigrants must adopt French values. In the first chapter, I break down the republican model and explain republicanism, address how scholars have talked about republicanism, and talk about citizenship in France. In the second chapter, I argue how throughout the twenty-first century politicians in regards of the school have implemented a more traditional form of republicanism by taking a stronger stance of the wearing of religious symbols in the school, and I trace the current debate back to past debates about the question of secularism in the school. Lastly, in the third chapter I argue that present in the many immigration policies of the twenty-first century that notions of the republican model play a key role in the policy and discourse of political systems, such as the French Constitutional court. This project looks at policies and political discourse as it frame of analysis.
