Abstract
The number of women working in sports is higher than ever. Women are still
disproportionately underrepresented in the upper-level positions, resulting in a question of
whether identifying as a woman affects career success of individuals working in athletics. This
study aims to examine and understand the perception of gender discrimination in the sports
industry and its potential correlation to lack of career success. Individuals who are
female-identifying workers in sports at the intercollegiate and higher levels were issued a survey.
After two weeks, with individuals given a reminder at the midway point, the final contributions
totaled 138 for a response rate of 6.9%. Using multiple choice, Likert scale, and open-ended
style questions, the individuals were asked a variety of questions about their encounters with
gender discrimination in sports. About 60% of women reported either seeing or personally
experiencing gender discrimination in their athletic work environments, and 53.7% had little to
no change or no change at all in finding a resolution for any incidents they had encountered.
When questioned if their experiences worsened when entering the sports field, over 40% of
women answered that gender discrimination is worse in their athletics role than their positions in
another industry.
