Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine how an injury to the knee affects an NFL quarterback’s performance. Knee injuries included were sprains and partial or complete tears of the ACL, LCL, MCL, or meniscus. Performance statistics from the 2006 season to the 2022 seasons were collected for all quarterbacks from Pro Reference Football, with the most important statistic being total QBR. The season of injury was also recorded from various publicly available sources. Over the study period, 48 quarterbacks were found to have injured their knees. Eighteen athletes were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria included not having knee injuries in consecutive years, having performance data for the year prior and after injury, and being ranked above a 50. There was no statistically significant evidence to indicate knee injuries impacted the performance of the athlete in the year after injury or in the year of injury. However, while there was no statistical significance, in the year after injury it is indicated there is a slight decrease in performance. Thus, indicating surgeons and physical therapy are effective in returning athletes to nearly the same level of performance. Each type of knee injury, in the study, should be further investigated to analyze the differences each has on performance.
