Abstract
The goal of this paper was to answer the research question: How does the presence of drug cartels and violence affect police corruption in Mexico? This paper analyzes police corruption and measures what economic, political, and demographic variables impact it using a data regression model. It evaluates how corruption became a problem in Mexico and why it continues to be an issue to this day. Two regression models were created to explore the relationship between different independent variables and police corruption. This was done because corruption is difficult to measure, so two different datasets for police corruption were used. The datasets used to measure police corruption in Mexico were the percentage of the population that perceive their state to be insecure and the percentage of the population over the age of 18 who had suffered from an act of corruption. As will be discussed later in the paper, factors such as police pay, the presence of cartel conflicts, and the number of state security and justice agencies were all found to have a statistically significant effect on the amount of police corruption that goes on in each Mexican state.
