Abstract
Despite being known as a stable democracy, Senegal has faced various challenges, including economic and social inequalities, corruption, and power concentration in the hands of the ruling elites. The country's democracy is also weakened by weak opposition, the politicization of the judiciary, and power concentration in the executive branch. Additionally, high poverty rates and youth unemployment contribute to growing social and economic inequalities. However, the Y'en A Marre movement emerged in 2011 and brought together artists, journalists, and activists to demand social and political change in Senegal. They emphasized citizen participation and accountability and successfully mobilized young people to engage in politics and demand accountability from their leaders. The Y'en a Marre movement's success reflects the importance of civic engagement in promoting democracy and political change. Also, the movement's focus on advancing African culture and values in government is consistent with the views of former Senegalese President Senghor, who believed that African values might be utilized to create a better and more democratic society. They have promoted a feeling of togetherness and identity among the country's youth by including them in politics through popular culture, such as music and art. Because of its colonial past and current impacts on their interactions, it is essential to consider France's position in Senegal's politics. Giving residents a voice and supporting democratic values are fundamental to Senegal's democracy, and accountability and civic participation are crucial in fostering constructive change. Overall, Senegal's political landscape offers lessons for other countries grappling with similar challenges, highlighting the potential of social movements to promote positive change and the importance of engaging young people in the political process.
