Abstract

This senior project looks to answer one question: building on the history of ecological economics and its main objectives, what is in store for its future? To answer this question, I created a four-episode podcast series based on different aspects of the ecological economics field: its history, its two main areas of controversy, and its future. Each podcast episode is based on an extensive literature review for each chapter of the written portion, corresponding to these four topics mentioned above. At its very core, ecological economics is a profoundly radical field that could offer solutions to reducing the irreversible impact that humans have left on the planet. However, it would essentially reject the economic behaviours that have become so accepted by policymakers and businesses, but also by many individuals across the globe in their daily lives. Therefore, does ecological economic thinking bear an opportunity to become commonplace in the near future? By examining ecological economics writing since its inception as a field to the present, it is clear that the field is at a crossroads. Ecological economics has identified what has been going wrong, yet a straightforward path towards an achievable solution has yet to be discovered. Identifying this disconnect is the goal of my senior project.
