Abstract
This study examines the financial sustainability of soccer clubs in Ligue 1 and La Liga, focusing on how revenue diversification impacts on-field performance. Through a thorough comparative analysis of financial data, I explore the relationship between broadcasting rights, matchday income, sponsorships, and player transfers. The research addresses the question: How do soccer clubs in Ligue 1 and La Liga diversify their revenue streams, and what factors contribute most to their financial sustainability? The methodology relies on financial ratios, including debt-to-equity ratio, player investment ratio, net profit margin, revenue diversification index, and data from economic reports and industry analyses like Capology. Key findings reveal that Ligue 1 clubs, particularly smaller teams, depend heavily on broadcasting and transfers, while big-market La Liga clubs leverage their global brand value and matchday revenue. The results suggest sufficient revenue diversification is crucial for teams’ financial sustainability and on-field success, particularly with challenges like Financial Fair Play regulations, fluctuating TV deals, and post-pandemic recovery. This study contributes to a more in-depth understanding of how clubs in these leagues can adapt their financial strategies to ensure long-term stability and success.
